Further, it is declared that the 7 old IITs, IT-BHU (Varanasi) and ISM Dhanbad are going to increase their seats by 13% for the coming academic session, i.e. in 2009. Here is a comparision of the number of seats in IITs in 2008 and 2009. The number of seats in IITs in 2009 mentioned below is just a rough estimate and donot indicate exact figures.

Keep it simple

As you are required to solve 150 questions in 180 minutes, the difficulty of questions is kept low & they are framed so as to be solved quickly. Speed and accuracy both hold important. I suggest you to be at ease, relax, keep confident and work at your natural speed. A conscious effort to increase speed may lead to a poor accuracy. Also, DON’T KEEP YOUR EYES FIXED ON THE WATCH, it will only create panic.

About the questions

Books Suggested: NCERTs

As far as individual subjects are concerned – in PCM, the questions are mostly straight forward and directly formula based. All you have to take into consideration is you should never start attempting a question blindly, go for it only if you are sure that you can do that particular question (the same rule that holds validity for your JEE too). For English there is no short cut. At most, you can cover it up by scoring in other sections. In chemistry, either you’ll directly know the answer, or the question seems to have been dropped from an alien world (especially with inorganic). This might happen if questions are framed from old Chemistry NCERT as the BITSAT question bank hasn’t changed much with the change in CBSE syllabi (at least not in 2008). I believe you should not panic seeing such questions because if they are out-of-syllabi for you, it’s the same for others as well, so it’s not just you who can’t answer such questions.

Still if you want to know if such questions have been removed or not, try the following:

Checking up syllabus of Chemistry on BITS website & matching it with the two NCERTs (2006-07 & 2007-08).

Consulting friends who have already appeared for their BITSAT.

Oh yes, do remember to go through Stereochemistry from old NCERT.

Preparing for the exam

Don’t take a date too early or too late. If you take it too early, you tend to get panicky that you are short of time for revision, and if it goes far too late, you acquire a feeling of frustration. Now this is what I’ve observed generally, you should choose according to your potentials and habits.

Try to make most of the decisions at home. Decide exactly in which order you will attempt the four sections. If you have practiced a full practice test you will be in a better position to decide the order (my order was Physics–>Mathematics—>English–>LR–>Chemistry; and I chose this order because I was most confident in physics, out of the 4, so decide that way).

When you solve the paper don’t make wild guesses. Answer only those questions about which you are sure. And the questions which leave you in little doubt, mark them for review and move ahead. Don’t linger over such questions.

Bonus questions

Let me come to Bonus Questions now. Should one opt for them? You can’t decide this beforehand. There are some conditions which you should analyze while you are giving the exam. After your first ‘non-wild-guesses’ session of attempting is over, quickly answer all those questions which you have marked for review and you think can be answered. After that, count the number of questions still left unmarked. Now you have to analyze three things together:

Time.

Negative marking you may get on incorrectly answering the unattempted questions.

The marks you think you will definitely get out of those twelve questions in the given time.

Go for bonus questions only if you have less unanswered questions. My suggestion for time is [18 + (no. of Questions unmarked/3)] minutes.

Quick Tips

“Paper is going to be very easy” - don’t carry this mindset. Though true it leads to a poor performance.

Do not loose your temper an don’t panic when you fall behind time.

Do practice one or more full length papers.

Prefer morning time for exam.

At the end, believe me, luck plays a very crucial role and it may affect your score by 10%. Rest, keep it cool, and have FAITH IN YOURSELF.

ALL THE BEST.

By

Himanshu Gupta (BITSAT score 439)

Article Source on KnowledgeBin

Tips by IIT-JEE 2007 Topper - Achin Bansal

In an exclusive interview with 2007 IIT topper, Achin Bansal tells his mantra for success, his recipe for academic acumen, his intellectual trajectory and much more.

What are the factors that have made you notch the highest rank in the JEE exam?

Regular hard work, determination and confidence. After I entered my eleventh grade, I would put in regular 8-10 hours for IIT preparations. Whenever I would study, it would be with full concentration. Concentration is a vital key to success. One can study for 16 hours minus concentration. This will not fructify any positive results.

When did you seriously started thinking on writing the JEE exam?

I had always been standing first in my class from the sixth standard. My father is a doctor but I wanted to become an engineer. I wanted to inhale the aroma of the best engineering institute of the country. The initial desire to study in IIT filtered into me when I entered the ninth standard. Till the tenth one can do well through rote learning. But IIT exam requires a different set of knowledge. The fundas have to be cleared and you should have a good analytical capacity.

How did you prepare for the exams?

I use to solve all the problems of different books. And yes, I attended the Bansal classes in Kota during my summer vacations and whenever I felt the need to be guided. The lectures and assignments of Bansal classes have groomed me a lot for the exam. Then I used to always participate in the various competitions that were held in the Bansal classes. I was mostly ranked between one to ten in these competitions. This bolstered my confidence a lot.

Where would you like to join? What do you intend doing after your BTech?

I am planning to join Computer Science in IIT Mumbai. Mumbai offers a plethora of co-curricular activities. There are many options after engineering. I can do MBA, MS or M Tech. Frankly speaking I have not yet decided anything firmly.

Did anyone motivate you to study?

Yes, my parents, my teachers. But success comes only if the motivation is from within. I was never under any duress to study. It was my own will power and desire to excel. Without these two factors any amount of coaching will not reap any results.

In your dictionary, what is more important hard work or intelligence?

It is 80 percent hard work, five percent intelligence and the rest is what we say fate or destiny.

Do small cities have disadvantage as far as coaching is concerned?

Yes, certainly. Good coaching and proper guidance are the two vital ingredients for cracking the exam

Any advice you would like to prescribe for the aspirants?

Work very hard. There is no other prescription but hard work. But when you inch close to your exam, be relaxed. Stress can sometimes hamper results. Quality of study is important. Quantity is not important. Your target should be clear. Work hard and leave the rest to God.

How did you react when you saw your result?

I was confident on getting a rank amongst the first ten. My parents were busy ringing up to find out about the results as the web line traffic was intense. Finally when I got my roll no on the computer screen with ranking as 1, my first reaction was that it was an error. ?There should have one more figure after one.? So I kept checking the results again and again till finally the verdict was clear.

Was it all books and tutorials or you took out time for recreation?

I used to watch a movie once a month. I am also very fond of sports. But then academics was my sole priority.

How are you celebrating your success?

I have thrown a party for my friends in Kota. There are some more parties on the sleeve. Then there were a lot of media interviews. I am doing a lot of net surfing these days.
